The sequel currently has a working title – clown, Madness for two. The word is French for “madness for two”. The term is a mental disorder that can affect more than one person. This is particularly interesting as actor Willem Dafoe suggested he wanted to play a copycat clown, pitted against Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. And if you’re familiar with the comics, you might know that Batman has encountered the Joker Princes several times in his career, often without even being aware of it. So if Phillips manages to make such a film, it could reference multiple stories, and perhaps tie in with a larger universe.

The film revolves around a failed comedian named Arthur Fleck following a corrupt 1981 version of Gotham City. He hits a new low every day from which he takes out his frustration on society. Soon he embraces chaos, and becomes an agent of utter chaos. By the end of the film, Arthur has managed to influence several other individuals to commit robberies and murders.

The film was the first R-rated film to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office. And now that Warner Bros. is under new management, they have made the sequel a priority. The new management reportedly also wants Henry Cavill to return as Superman, and make him at the forefront of the DCEU.
