Cooper is ruling all directions as he takes on the role of a world-renowned musician while writing and directing the upcoming biopic.
The first look includes several black and white shots from the film in which Cooper undergoes an amazing transformation. The actor bears an uncanny resemblance to the West Side Story musician.
Also appearing in several scenes is actor Carey Mulligan, who will play Felicia Montealegre, the wife of Leonard Bernstein. The musician’s wedding will also be an important part of the film’s story.
Cooper revealed that he was first approached by Steven Spielberg for the role of Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro” but was working on “A Star Is Born” at the time. Cooper asked Spielberg if he could handle the project because he really wanted to write and direct films and Spielberg wasn’t actually going to execute it for a while. Spielberg agreed and Cooper was hired to write the film, a process that took him at least 4 years.
Cooper’s love of composing goes back to his childhood. Before becoming an actor, he had dreams of becoming a musician, which explains Cooper’s passion for writing a film about one of the greatest musicians in American history.
Leonard Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1918. Bernstein led a major American symphony orchestra and was historically the first-born American conductor to do so.
Throughout his career, Bernstein was honored with 2 Tony Awards, 7 Emmys and 16 Grammy Awards. He is best known for composing the music for the 1961 classic West Side Story. Bernstein died in 1990 at the age of 72. They had 3 children, Jamie, Nina and Alexander.
Bradley Cooper was excited to announce that principal photography for the film would begin in May. The cast is said to include Jeremy Strong, Matt Bomer, and Maya Hawke.
