Sega has finally released the first few seconds of gameplay footage from new game Sonic Frontiers, and it looks worryingly good.

Why worry? Well, as anyone who’s played Sonic the Hedgehog games over the past two decades will know, they almost always seem promising at first, before slowly seeming less and less — until the final game is finally a dud. Being is not disclosed.

History may weigh against it, but hopefully this isn’t the fate of Sonic Frontiers. The teaser trailer below is pretty short, but it’s the first time the game has ever been shown in action, with Sega promising to reveal more detailed ones throughout June.

As such, there’s no explanation as to what’s actually going on in the footage, although it does have a more serious, less choppy, tone than usual, with muted colors and music.

The only thing I’ve seen so far in Sonic Frontiers is a few shots of the open world environment and then, as of now, it’s weird how reminiscent of Zelda: Breath of the Wild it is.

It doesn’t seem like much of the game, and the footage is actually some pretty standard railroad grinding, boss battles, and… we’re not sure what’s up with those metal balls.

The point, however, is that the graphics look good, the environments feel intriguing, and there’s clearly a lot of money and effort involved, which will certainly be a change from other recent 3D Sonic games.

In a normal year you’d expect a longer trailer to be unveiled at E3, but since there’s no E3 this year, Sega is planning on revealing all at IGN.

This will obviously include practical impressions, interviews and ‘and’. Coverage will begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, although what exactly will be revealed on the first day is not yet clear.
