Saint-tienne fans launched a pitch attack with violent intent after the match, attacking their own players and throwing flares and their side being relegated from Ligue 1.
The second leg of the relegation play-off with Auxerre ended 1–1, as in the first leg, meaning the competition went into a penalty shootout.

Players and officials had to get off the pitch as quickly as possible as fans stormed the pitch and lashed out at players and staff trying to get down the tunnel.
When the violence started, loud explosions were heard and some flames were also hurled into the stands, filling the air with smoke.
french publication RMC Sport Tear gas shells were also hurled and journalists and cameramen were struggling to deal with the smoke released, it said.
However, he also pointed out that despite the chaotic scenes, security personnel managed to clear the area from the pitch invaders.
