a A Muslim girl took off her hijab in a ‘racially agitated’ attack at a bus stop.

When the 16-year-old was on her way to school to take her exams, she was approached by a woman outside the Christian Center on Embankment Road in Plymouth.

Devon and Cornwall police say the woman – believed to be 18 or 19 – was arguing on her mobile phone a few seats away from the victim just before the incident on Friday morning.

When the call ended she turned the student on in anger, barking ‘what’s your problem’ at first, even though the girl later explained to officers that she tried not to look in his direction.

Without provocation, the suspect then tried to punch her, but missed before pulling the hijab off her head.

A kind member of the public noticed that the girl was upset and frightened, and accompanied her on the bus to make sure she got to school safely.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said the student was “extremely disturbed” by the attack, which is believed to be racially provocative, and could not sit the exam as a result.

“We believe there was at least one other person at the bus stop who witnessed the incident,” a statement said.

‘It was an unprovoked attack on a young girl going to school.

The motive of the attack is unknown but it is believed to be racially or religiously agitated because the woman was wearing a hijab.

Hijab is worn by some Muslim girls and women to maintain their modesty and privacy from unrelated men.

‘It would have been very disturbing for him as he would feel that his privacy is being violated in such a public place.’
