What to Look for This Jubilee Weekend: Pudding, Snake, and Basil Brush

The Platinum Jubilee celebrations have really started today, and there’s no better way to stay on TV.

From live concerts to the winning Jubilee Pudding, a whole host of royal events are with us over the long weekend.

And the main attraction will be the Platinum Jubilee pageant on Sunday, where we can expect many national treasures to be involved.

Here’s what to tune.

Thursday June 2

A long weekend opens on a familiar note for Queen Elizabeth II as she joins her nearest and dearest for their traditional birthday celebrations at the Horse Guards Parade.

The antics of Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex haven’t made room on the balcony for the Red Arrows.

Andrew doesn’t have either.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are set to attend the Queen Vic’s platinum bash thrown by publicist Mick Carter (King Danny Dyer).

Platinum Beacon: Lighting the Jubilee

BBC1, 8 pm

If you have room in your garden or just a window box, you can attend as special ceremonies light up and down the ground. Imagine a homespun take on an Olympic opening, with lots of chatter—two hours to fill up.

Forget its pageants and parties, the royal family most famously enjoys an annual pilgrimage to Epsom for the Flat Race. The Princess Royal represents this year.

National Lottery’s Big Street Party

Not really a street party, a concert on a particularly fake street in Manchester.

Here we have Steps, Ella Henderson, Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Grenon and more pretending they’re not angry they didn’t get an invitation to the Platinum Party.

Does Our Queen watch the Eurovision Song Contest? If not, she may be incensed by the appearance of the late but welcome space man Sam Ryder for this musical line-up, courtesy of his stormtrooper performance in Turin.

Sam will be on a bill that includes Queenie (understandable), Alicia Keys, Andrea Bocelli, Hans Zimmer and Diana Ross.

Platinum Competition

Circus acts, street dancers and children make up the ‘River of Hope’… All this and much more is promised in a pageant aimed at showing how times have changed during the past 70 years.

A diverse selection of celebs called ‘national treasures’ by organizers – you don’t often see Basil Brush, Gary Lineker and Heston Blumenthal in the same sentence – will pop up here. Also, Ed Sheeran.
