Joker Sequel: Joaquin Phoenix Confirms Return As He’s Reading Script

Director Todd Phillips finally put an end to ongoing speculation that a second installment of the critically acclaimed blockbuster was in the works when he shared a picture of the script on Tuesday.

In the Instagram post, a black-and-white photo features Joaquin sitting by a window, with a picturesque skyline in the background, and the script resting on his lap while smoking a cigarette.

Todt also included a close-up photo of the red cover of the script, as the title suggests: ‘Joker folie deux’, French referring to a medical term related to a mental disorder that affects two or more people. Influences, and ‘Written by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips. In the lower left corner, the script is from May 18, 2022, so they’ve been keeping the news under their hat for at least a few weeks.

The original Joker, released in October 2019, was a huge commercial success grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, with the dark film earning 11 Oscar nominations and Best Original Score and Best Original Score for Joaquin. Two wins for the actor. Performing as a neurotic stand-up comedian turned serial killer.

Joaquin also won Best Actor at the BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice Awards (CCA), Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

The original film followed the life of tortured wannabe comedian Arthur Fleck, whose sense of being oppressed by society eventually turns him into a notorious criminal mastermind.

Along with Joaquin, the film’s cast also included Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz.

Reports of a sequel first surfaced in May 2021 but Joaquin’s involvement may come as a surprise as he had previously expressed mixed feelings about a second film.

They told LA Times: ‘Long before the release or we had any idea whether it would be successful, we talked about the sequel.’

“In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, ‘Todd, can you start working on the sequel? There’s so much to explore.” It was kind of a joke – but not really.’

Then he said: ‘I won’t do a sequel just because the first film is a success. This is ridiculous.’

The release date of Joker 2 has not been announced yet.
