In Tuesday’s letter, Page wants Microsoft to subsidize the cost of a Saturn mini-console, as another reader is concerned about Sonic Frontiers.

So Xbox has two showcases planned this month but there won’t be much in the way of new announcements at Summer Game Fest. Boy, do I really miss the days of E3. We don’t know of any other incidents that are definitely happening but we do know that EA and Ubisoft are doing nothing. So will Nintendo do its usual direct? Maybe, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I doubt they have anything else coming this year, so they don’t really need to do anything right now, especially when they’re not playing the same game as Microsoft.
Sony is though and I think they’ll have another state of play this month. they have to. If Microsoft has a lot of big reveals for Xbox – which I assume they will or isn’t doing its job – there’s no way Sony can let them go for weeks or months with good publicity and nothing by itself.
I am sure Sony will have another show before the end of the month. They still haven’t given God of War: Ragnarok a release date and they definitely should have other games they can announce right now. If Sony gives up on those disclosures by July or August, only their marketing people will mess up. At this point it is less a question of who blinks first and who makes the silly decisions first.
a moment in time
It looks like GoldenEye 007 is going to be one of the big announcements on Sunday, but I really wonder what kind of remaster or remake it will be. As iconic as that game is, it’s virtually unplayable in its original form, so you immediately run into the Resident Evil 4 effect, where you have to mod it so much to make it interesting. About to lose everything.
I guess we have to accept that some games are a product of their time and if a remaster means more than just raising the frame rate and increasing the resolution it’s a sign that it’s either going to be turned into a full remake. or just be left alone.
We don’t know what it’s going to be for GoldenEye yet, but I’m willing to bet it’s just the remaster they tried to release before, which not only still looks old-fashioned It’s going to look really weird with rather modern controls.
Diablo Immortal almost sounds unbelievably terrifying. £80,000 to level up a character or you can choose not to spend a penny and it will only take you 10 years?! Is it me or are mobile games quickly spiraling out of control in terms of loot boxes and microtransactions? I know they’ve always been bad, but now they’re giving up any pretense of being real video games.
I don’t see what one can get from them, but it is their business. My primary concern is that none of this leaks into actual games and in fact, other than sports games like FIFA, I think most publishers have done pretty well on that count, which should be tempting.
I’ve also been impressed by the fight against NFTs and to make sure most gamers are united, they don’t become a thing. Hopefully we can keep these unethical practices away, because if console games were like mobile games I guess I’d read a book.
GC: Wait until you hear about Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds.

evil in name only
The Taser details about the Resident Evil 4 remake were exactly what I was thinking.
This new game may have the same characters, locations, etc., but it’s not the game I’ve been loving for over 17 years!
As Wonk said in his characteristics of the reader Over the weekend, Resident Evil 4 required cheese, but for the time being it’s feeling like Resident Evil 4: Vegetarian Edition!
Capcom is already calling it a “horrific survival horror story.”
Resident Evil 4 is tense and thrilling but it never gets too gruesome, even on the toughest difficulty!
In attempting to create a more modern Grimdark game, Capcom didn’t understand what made the original so special.

It’s a real shame about not having a Sega Saturn mini-console, but I can’t say it’s a surprise. The machine is famous for being a hardware nightmare and let’s face it. No one as crazy as Sega fans can buy a mini-console for the price of the PlayStation 5.
Well… some (I might) but nowhere near enough for Sega to be worth the effort. Also, didn’t they lose the source code for most games?
If Microsoft is serious about the game’s solidity they should jump in and help balance the costs, because there’s a mountain of great games on Saturn that only those wealthy enough to afford the rare imports can play. Huh.
Not that I usually thought it was any Microsoft business, but if they want to put their money where their mouth is then that would be a good example.
GC: The source code for Panzer Dragoon Saga has been lost, but we’re not aware that this has happened to any other game. And yet, that doesn’t mean it can’t be emulated.
Given that Starfield is delayed, The Callisto Protocol is now my most anticipated game of the year.
Because this type of terrifying horror usually doesn’t sell surprisingly well, I was curious to see what bonuses I’d get if I pre-ordered, and to my surprise, it’s been pre-ordered on Xbox. -Cannot be ordered. Unique.
I know, I know we shouldn’t pre-order, but we don’t get games like this very often, so I’ll just buy at launch.
I hope it does very well. Elden Ring sold out a lot and it’s definitely not a mainstream game in general. Can light strike twice with the Callisto Protocol?
Either way, I hope it sells well enough for a sequel. I think 5 million+ across all platforms should do the trick and if it’s good, it’ll hit the rest.
What does GC think about the sale?
GC: 5 million is a huge hit. Resident Evil Village grossed only 6.1 million and is the fastest-selling entry in the franchise. If Callisto Protocol manages 1 million it will be doing pretty well, probably on a relatively low budget.
sonic spin cycle
I think the reader writing about Sonic Frontiers has it right. There’s no way this is going to be another mega (no pun intended) disappointment. As others are pointing out, the footage looks bad so far, and nothing like Sega and the Sonic team probably isn’t the most reliable company in the game…believable to be awesome.
Where we’d expect to believe they suddenly got the ability to make games of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s quality and complexity, when most of the time they can barely match Bubby 3D.

Margit and Godric were memorable bosses but the sense of spectacle and camaraderie in Radan’s battle was absolutely epic. It took me about 20 attempts to take down the red rotten beast, and what happened after the fight took me completely by surprise – I had activated Runny’s quest during that time. In my opinion, FromSoftware has designed one of the most cinematic, unusual, grand bosses ever.
I really don’t understand how some gamers found this fight too frustrating or unfair to be honest, I was at level 50 and every time I died I thought it was entirely my own fault that I wasn’t reacting fast enough to his deadly attacks, or adapting my strategy and using the surroundings to my advantage. The lock-on camera also behaved surprisingly well for such frantic, dynamic conflict.
A casual moment in the fight, which involved a recurring character of a suspicious nature, was pure chuckle. This boss has it all, the lore of even the respected general is the most charming and nostalgic of all souls. Although that poor horse..
Then I visited the Japanese Hogwarts, fortified by several duplicates of the Burger King mascot, and gave Queen Renella a royal beat. Now, while not the most challenging boss in the game, the fantastical aesthetics, atmosphere, music, attack patterns and combat arrangements have really left a lasting impression on me. I don’t know if I was experiencing Bayonetta withdrawal symptoms or what but the superlunary backdrop/atmosphere and impossibly proportionate dimensions of the sorceress stirred up the PlatinumGames leading lady in the second phase of the fight. The classic Moon River song also came to mind..,
From humble beginnings to impeccable reputation, the longtime SoulsbornKirking formula could be the video game industry’s hotbed!

only reason 5? Does anyone in Avalanche have indecent photos of the CEO of Square Enix or something? I can’t think of a series that would have had so many sequels. It’s not bad either, that’s all.
This week’s hot topic
Xbox and Bethesda Showcases are due late on Sunday, with Inbox asking you what you’re expecting to see announced later this week, both this June and at other E3-esque shows.
E3 may never return, but Microsoft, at least, is maintaining that same schedule with its big 90-minute preview event. So what games and other revelations are you looking forward to? What surprises do you predict, including new hardware and service announcements, and games to be released this year?
Sony, Nintendo and third-party publishers haven’t confirmed if they’re doing something similar this month, but if they do, what do you expect from it? And why do you think that’s probably not going to happen?
