Manchester United have been given hope in their bid to sign Frankie de Jong this summer, with the midfielder admitting that his role for the Netherlands is more appropriate than his current role with Barcelona.
New United boss Erik ten Haag has identified his fellow Dutchman as a priority transfer target this summer.
While the transfer saga was underway, de Jong turned in a scintillating midfield performance for his country on Friday night as the Netherlands registered a 4-1 win over neighboring Belgium.
De Jong was at the center of an outstanding performance from Louis van Gaal, who hasn’t always been able to consistently deliver that level of performance in a Barcelona shirt.
And the 25-year-old suggests that the best of them come from playing in a Dutch system.
De Jong told NOS after the match, ‘I like to be the first player to get the ball from the defenders.
“In the national team, I play differently than Barca. And I think it’s better for me.’
Barcelona are desperate to raise funds to ease some of their financial pressure on the club, with the Dutchman being their most prized asset.
Reports suggest that de Jong still needs some reassurance to move to Old Trafford, however, his priority is still to stay at Camp Nou.
But Barcelona’s desire to negotiate his sale has raised doubts in the midfielder’s mind, according to reports.
