The next mainline Final Fantasy will release next summer and the new trailer gives the first proper look at the combat and graphics.

It’s clear that no one at Sony knew or cared that it’s a double bank holiday weekend in the UK at the moment, as Thursday night’s play-offs were the most important of the year so far.

it was not enough The E3 counterpart, as very few first party games were shown, is just Horizon: Call of the Mountain, but you get a first look at the gameplay of Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 6, and… Final Fantasy 16.

There was a trailer previously for Square Enix’s new mainline sequel, but it featured extended shots of the gameplay, confirming that the game’s setting is basically Game of Thrones but with classic Final Fantasy summon creatures.

As you’d expect of any Final Fantasy game, even the trailer was full of confusing nomenclature, with summons actually being referred to within the game’s narrative as Eikons.

The trailer music also pronounces their names: Phoenix, Titan, Garuda, Ramuh, Shiva, Odin, Bahmut, and Ifrit — like a kind of sharper version of Pokémon.

The bad guys are called Dominant and while the storytelling takes itself a bit too seriously, the gameplay sounds like a lot of fun, though old school fans can balk at the fact that the combat feels entirely action-based.

Among anything else, Final Fantasy 16 is clearly a very technically impressive game, but then again it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive—with no word on a PC version.

However, as the release date was nearing something, Square Enix almost nailed things down this time next year.
