A government review recommends the complete cessation of cigarettes from the UK market.
The study says the legal age for the sale of tobacco products in England should be raised by one year each year until no one can buy them.
A similar policy, which would eventually lead to an outright ban on the sale of cigarettes, has been adopted in New Zealand.
It is unclear whether the government intends to adopt the proposal as an official policy, but it will be expected to respond at an appropriate time.
Javed Khan was tasked to prepare proposals to make smoking ‘obsolete’ by 2030.
In the conclusion of his report, he says: ‘The government now has an opportunity to make our country a place where cigarettes disappear from our shops…[and] Where the tobacco industry would not want to do business.
