A man stabbed a doctor and two nurses at a California hospital and locked himself inside a room for several hours.
Los Angeles police said the man walked into Encino Hospital Medical Center in the San Fernando Valley shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday.
It is understood that he asked doctors and nurses to treat anxiety before stabbing him, officials said.
Police said the victims were taken to a trauma center in critical condition, where one required surgery.
The condition of all three was later stated to be stable at Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center.
The man remained inside a hospital room for nearly four hours after the attack, as SWAT team members unsuccessfully tried to negotiate with him before arresting him, police said.
Officials said he was taken to another hospital to be treated for the injuries he sustained on his hands.
Police said the first floor of Encino Hospital and some nearby offices have been evacuated.
“We’ve got the patients out of the danger zone,” LAPD deputy chief Alan Hamilton told a news conference.
It is being told that before entering the emergency ward, the man had parked his car on the middle road.
Authorities have not released the attacker’s name, but department chief Hamilton said he has a long criminal record, which included the battery of a police officer last year and two arrests for resisting arrest.
There was no evidence that the man knew his victims.
Benjamin Roman, an ultrasound technician, told KNBC-TV that he had seen the man before the attack.
She said the man had a dog and that he may have been on drugs because he looked anxious and was covered in sweat.
After the hospital issued an ‘internal triage’ code, Roman said he saw a doctor and a nurse who were stabbed.
‘The doctor looked (like) she was in pain,’ he said.
‘There was a lot of blood and it looked like… he might have got his stomach.’
Yesterday’s attack comes two days after a gunman killed four people and then killed himself at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Officials said the assailant broke into a building on the St. Francis Hospital complex with little difficulty, hours after purchasing an AR-style rifle.
The man killed his surgeon and three others in a medical office.
He reportedly blamed the doctor for the constant pain after a recent back operation.
