My question now is, if a 11 year can deliver a baby why some hospital charging $20,000.00 plus for the same job?


It was disgusting. Especially when the bubble over the face burst. It was nasty enough that Kierra Nubin thinks she may go the adoption route.

But Kierra's thoughts are understandable considering she is an 11-year-old Gainesville girl who managed to remain calm during a hectic half-hour in the middle of the night to help deliver her baby sister, Marnia Smith.

"When I called 911, the lady took me through everything. When she said I was going to have to deliver the baby, I was shocked and I didn't want to deliver the baby, but I knew I had to," said Kierra, an A-student sixth-grader at Westwood Middle School. "It was nasty. When it came out, there was a big bubble around her face, and then it popped."

Kierra's actions early Wednesday morning drew praise from her family, doctors, Alachua County sheriff's officials and others who marveled at how the youth remained so cool during the birth - even getting a shoelace out of a sneaker for her mom, Lashirisha Webb, to tie off Marnia's umbilical cord.

"I think it's absolutely amazing. And she did an excellent job with the delivery - her mom didn't have any tears or anything," said Dr. George Buchanan, Webb's obstetrician. "She left almost nothing for me to do at all."

Webb put in a day's work at the Holiday Inn on 13th Street Tuesday. About 2 a.m. Wednesday, Webb woke up with contractions, even though Marnia wasn't due until Nov. 20. She went to a nearby Walgreens for a drink and, about 2:30 called her mom, Glovine Godbolt, and then laid on the sofa.

The contractions quickened. Webb reached down and felt the head emerging.

"Things happened pretty fast," Webb said. "I told (Kierra) to call 911 because I'm going to start pushing, so I started pushing. I'm very proud of her."

An eight-minute 911 recording shows Kierra maintained both poise and politeness through the quick birth. She calmly answered "yes ma'am" or "no ma'am" to the questions of call-taker Chasity McCloud, relayed McCloud's instructions to Webb, got towels in which to wrap Marnia and hand her to their mom, and got a shoelace.

The only hint of urgency came when Kierra told McCloud, "It's coming, it's coming," followed shortly by "It came out." Then Marnia's first wails could be heard.

Marnia was born about 3 a.m. and weighed five pounds. An emergency rescue crew arrived minutes after the birth, followed by Godbolt. Webb and Marnia were taken to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida.

Buchanan said Marnia was in fine condition and will soon join Kierra and another sister, Marnisha Smith, 2, at home.

Kierra went to school Wednesday and wrote about the birth for a class. A friend read it in class for her. Kierra was asked if it was true and what the birth was like.

"I was like, yes it's true, and it was disgusting," she said as she sat with her family at Shands on Wednesday evening. Kierra added she was unable to thank McCloud immediately after the birth, but wanted to do so.

And Kierra said one delivery is enough, that she has no desire to one day be a medical professional who delivers babies. In fact, she said she may not want to have one herself.

"I don't want to have babies," she said, adding she may "just adopt a child - adopt a child that needs somebody."
