KINGSTON – Glen Mills, coach of World and Olympic double sprint Champion, and World record-holder over 100 and 200 meters Usain Bolt, has not ruled out a clash between Ethiopia’s reigning World and Olympic Champion and World record-holder over 5,000 and 10,000 meters Kenenisa Bekele.
Mills responding to a question about the potential showdown between the sport two giants Bekele and Bolt stated that: “It’s been bandied about… if the circumstances are right and it can fit into our schedule, then why not (take him on).”
Since Bolt’s dominant performance at the Olympics and World Championships, the clash has been much talked about, but the matter of the ‘compromising’ distance seems to be a part of the dilemma.
Usain seems keen on taking on Bekele over a shorter distance; “I think I am pretty good at 600 meters,” Bolt said last week; however 800 meters and beyond, he stated, “I won’t have a chance.”
The world distance King also fancies his chances over a shorter distance, “I need it to
be 800 meters, maybe 700 meters” said Bekele.
Jos Hermens, Bekele’s manager doesn’t seem too enthusiastic about the potential showdown; “I would have to think about it this winter” Hermens was quoted as saying. He also added that he would be in touch with Usain’s manager, Ricky Simms.
Trackalerts has not gotten a response from Ricky Simms; however it’s worth noting that if both camps can work out a deal then this showdown would be a Gala event.
